As a classroom teacher, I often have students that are uninterested in reading. Many times, those that are not interested in reading are those that find reading to be difficult. It was like I was losing them, and they were tired of the same type of traditional teaching everyday. The main reason that I wanted to obtain a master's degree was to find a way to improve my teaching. I wanted all students to love reading and to be successful at it. One of the things that I have learned a lot about in the NLGL program for K-12 Reading at NC State is using technology to enhance instruction. I wanted to know how technology could also help readers to become more motivated and successful. In today's world, technology is always changing. Advances are being made, and more than 88 percent of the United States population has internet access according to the Internet Live Stats Website . Today's youth is constantly being exposed to the internet and the wealth of knowledge that is brought by it.
What I Learned:
Over the course of this program, I have tried new ways of teaching while using technology as a tool. There are so many different ways to use technology for instruction, and I am always finding new ideas to bring into my classroom. Students are much more engaged in the content that is being taught when technology is being used. I have witnessed many of my students that were originally uninterested in Guided Reading becoming excited about this daily activity. However, as a teacher leader I have found that many teachers are not sure of how to use technology in their instruction. With quality training, teachers are more likely to use technology in their lessons and therefore student engagement is increased. I hope to be able to assist my colleagues more in the future with incorporating technology in there reading lessons. As a future reading specialist, I will ensure that teachers are able to find tools to use in their lessons. I will also continue to use them for teaching in my own classroom or remediation. Students should feel the joy and excitement of reading, and technology is one of the tools that I have found that reveals that.
